Roast Profile: Medium

Tasting Notes: Aromatic, smooth, dark chocolate, black pepper

Taste Description: Sweetly aromatic, juicy citrus, smooth milk chocolate, and exotic spice.

There are few coffees as complex as this offering from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This high-grown, hard bean, Arabica coffee is processed by small scale farmers.  Aromatic notes of tropical fruit, toasted nuts, sweet tobacco, dark chocolate, and a cacophony of brown-spices make this coffee our most thought-provoking. It’s delicious in a drip brewer, but such a dark horse in a French press or pour-over. It’s particularly wily and delicious in an AeroPress.

Lacking a bit in well rounded flavour

This is the first Level Ground coffee I have tried. It has a pleasant flavour, but I find it a little bland and lacking in a well rounded, rich taste. It tastes watered down, somehow, with no satisfying boost of flavour after swallowing.

Great Coffee

Lovely flavour. Full character without unwanted bitterness.

It is It's own coffee

First off let me congratulate Level Ground for choosing coffee from this region. They are definitely an overlooked and under invested in region with regards to coffee. Deep with history and mystery DNC's coffee is no different. There is nothing like it or to compare it to, Fruuty, cantaloupe with plums and stone fruits to vanillas, milk chocolates and hazelnut. So there is something very unique in this high acidity coffee; however, I think Level Ground have failed to meet the full potential of this coffee. They have changed in recent years with their growth in popularity and I feel that their roasting has become a little too grocery chain commercialized. Beans sitting to long on shelves amid all the variety for the daily auto morning brew coffee buyers.

Glad Level Ground is doing well, it's a tough industry but I was really hoping that this one coffee would have more texture and depth to it when it came to espresso brewing. Really, DNC coffee is hard to find either as single or blend so to see this coffee go the the same homogeneous roast as their other beans was a little sad.

The flavours are there and complex, acidity a little low, texture almost nil, body is mild. BUT if you are using an immersion brew, pour over Chemex or the like or perhaps beven a Turkish brew your results will be much better. So that is why only the 4 stars.
