Tea Pyramids and Microplastics
In September 2019, CBC released an article highlighting the issue of microplastics in tea bags. Read the article here. This article (and study) looks at the effects of hot water on nylon tea bags. Our tea pyramids are not made from nylon; they are made from corn starch and are biodegradable.
What are our tea pyramids made of?
Biodegradable corn starch.
What is the most ecological choice for tea?
Loose leaf teas. The more unpackaged, the better! All of our teas are available in a loose leaf format, which produces the least amount of waste.
We’re thankful for research, and for the push to continually be better. We acknowledge that even though our tea pyramids are made from corn starch, and are biodegradable, we can do better. We will do better. Our future incoming shipments of our bagged tea will be packaged in paper tea bags. This will result in a change in the product and an increased number of tea bags per package, but we believe the disruption is worth the change.
The teas will switch to their new format within the next few months. You can expect to see Earl Grey, Green, and Black tea arrive in early 2020 in paper tea bags. The other types will follow as soon as we run out of the current packages.
Thank you for being committed customers to our fair trade tea.
